I bought this a few years when I was in that phase we all go through at some point - that phase when you want to buy every Vivitar you can get your hands on and see if really cheap cameras are just as good as really expensive cameras. Well I saw this one and it wasn't really all that cheap so I tried to find one for cheaper but didn't see any and the few I did come across after searching the globe were untested or for parts/repairs and didn't come with a dope-ass box, not to mention the instruction pamphlet. So I was like okay, I'll give it a shot, so to speak. It arrived, I fell in love, I shot a few rolls. Then I set it aside and forgot about it and hadn't touched it until I pulled it out a couple months ago and shot a couple more rolls with it. I've been going back and forth since then on whether or not to sell it. I mean, I have to sell some cameras. I'm running out of room and even if I had all the room in the world I don't want to end up like those guys in Vintage Camera Collectors who can't even remember what cameras they have and why they bought them in the first place and have those ridiculous displays that they think look good but really just look like a dusting nightmare. As I took inventory of the Vivitar wing of my camera storage facility (okay okay, as I dug through the box of Vivitars in my closet ... is that better?) I realized I had at least five - FIVE! - Vivitar prime lens point and shoots in my collection. Again, that's not counting the zooms. So something's gotta give. It's not that I like this one the least, it's more like this is the one that I think has the most potential to draw in another sucker like me ---er, I mean ... to attract another discerning compact enthusiast like myself. Do I really think someone is going to pay my price for a Vivitar point and shoot? Well, maybe. I mean, it does have a 35mm f/3.5 coated glass lens on it branded with Vivitar's top-of-the-line Series 1 brand. And it's really small - I'll post a photo of it next to an Olympus Stylus for scale. And it takes pretty good pictures too. But most importantly, no one else you know will have one and they'll all swoon with envy when you whip out your Pocket 35 and say hey let's get down to some serious photography. It can run on either one CR123 battery, or two AAAs. Has a flash that works, and auto focus with focus lock. And seriously, look how cool that box is.
Three things happened in 1989 that would change the course of the world - well, my world anyway: I graduated high school, Taylor Swift was born, and Vivitar released the Pocket 35 into the wild. If you haven't graduated high school - there's still time, you can do it! If you haven't realized that Taylor Swift is the most gifted singer-songwriter in a generation or three, you really need to go listen to Folklore and Evermore immediately. And if you haven't shot a Pocket 35, here's your chance.
TL/DR: overpriced Vivitar in a cool box that I'm not entirely sure I want to sell, hence the big price for a Vivitar.
